The reformers tossed out all sorts of things that needed tossed, kept some things they should have tossed, and tossed out some priceless treasures. One of those priceless treasures that hit the rubbish heap was the idea that followers of Jesus could benefit from time alone with God, listening to Him and yes, even hearing His voice. I don’t mean just a vague sense of well-being. I mean hear God saying actual words that can be strung together to make a sentence.
When I hear from God, it’s usually more like ideas mingled with words. The ideas are His, and the expression is His, but at least some of the words are mine. So God kind of writes in my style, with my pen in my hand in my journal. It’s not automatic writing, but it’s not me, either. (Well, most of the time it isn’t. Sometimes it is and I get to black it all out later.)
My friend, Nathan, has written an excellent post about hearing from God. Take a few minutes to check it out. You’ll be glad you did.
