I was musing over the significance of physical light, and what it says to us about Jesus. When I asked God what He might like to say to me about the subject, this is what I believe He spoke into my thoughts:
When you turn your face toward Me, you see Me. You will see what you are facing toward, whether you keep looking and looking at the present age or at that which alone is eternal — Your God. Let Me be eternal in and through you all. In that way, you also forever live, for nothing in Me ever passes into oblivion — indeed it cannot, for wherever you go, I AM there.
In the physical world, except at its source, light does not shine visibly until it is reflected. The reception and the reflection of light manifests its presence to all around it, and illuminates its surroundings. Because of the atmosphere of the earth, the sky around you glows with the sun’s light.
What if I made an exception? One day, what if I were to give you light unreflected? What if I were to make the glory of the sun visible all on its own, without the need to be reflected (by the atmosphere and things on the earth)?
Then I would set the universe ablaze with light everywhere. I would not do this, but what would happen if I did? There would be no colors that you could see. There would be no perception. Spiritual light is like that — I give it to you a little bit at a time, in reflections — reflections of this world you live in. I give you this world as a tutorial; as a way to learn and understand the real and the concrete — the genuine things that are eternal.
You live now in a storybook — flat, two-dimensional. In this way you can begin to see shadowy shapes of that which is real. Nothing is as it seems to you now, though you try ever so hard to comprehend it. Yet everything is exactly as I have portrayed it to you in My word and in My world. Let go of ALL of your preconceived ideas of the world. Let them simply float off into space and let Me open your eyes to that which is truly real.
I’ve been trying to do that, Lord. I don’t want to wander off into error — reinterpreting and misinterpreting Your world and Your Word. I’m pretty sure I’m not immune to that. How will I know?
You know in many ways: through the light of scripture, reflected and refracted through brothers and sisters, in the hearts and the minds of My people, including you; through My essence, which is love, light, intelligence, motive, purity, spirit; through My written word and the messages of the prophets; through the checks and balances of your own hearts and minds and spirits.
Lord, please let it be as you say. It’s my desire, too. How can I stand to miss any of the things You have to show me? I covet every scrap of revelation You desire to give me of yourself and of how your great work of art and beauty, this world, reveals You to me. I want You to shine through and from me.
