“For those who live according to this world set their minds on the things of the natural realm, but those who live in accord with the Spirit set their minds on the things of the spiritual realm. For the mindset of the natural person is death, but the outlook of the spiritual person is life and peace. For the thought processes of the natural world are hostile toward God, for they do not support nor submit to God’s law, neither can they. So then, they who are of the natural world cannot please God.” (Romans 8:5-8, my paraphrase)
I and some sisters have been memorizing Romans chapter 8, and it’s been an absolutely amazing blessing. Here is what I received from God regarding the above passage:
As the spiritual realm stands all around you, the invisible reality, so you can just begin to sense its presence. You are in a snow globe with a tiny plastic landscape, yet you believe this to be the real world. Not so. This is a deadly deception for you. Do not try to see your way out on your own. In yourselves — in your flesh — you are blinded by the outside brightness. Only in Christ can you step out. In Him the door has been opened, and through this opened door you have passed from deception into truth; from darkness into light; from the representation into the real.
Your bodies remain in this world, and they are and must be as corpses to you, for they have yet to enter into the adoption. So while it appears to you and to everyone else that you walk in this world; to the degree that your thoughts have synapsed over into the spiritual realm, to that degree, you are not of the natural realm.
It is true, then, that you no longer are of the natural realm. So if you live in harmony with the spiritual realm, while your body walks in the natural world, is not your life truly of Him and not of yourselves? How can you, being dead to sin, walk any longer therein?
Instead of thinking according to the flesh, then, set — SET — your minds on the things of the Spirit. My words to you are life everlasting. My words are life and peace and My words are joy. If you will meditate on My words and not your own, then you will have life. But if you allow the lies of the abominable one to infringe on your minds, they will take root in your spirits and crowd out the words of life.
This is not a minor point — an optional extra. Keeping your heart only for Me requires pulling out the weeds. The weeds will choke out My good word and take up all the nutrients in the soil. You will not know what is good and what is bad. You will live by the weeds and not by My Son’s life which is in you, which alone is eternal. The weeds are the natural. The seed of the Kingdom is eternal. The weeds of the natural realm will easily choke out the good seed if you allow it. The garden is your heart and you have the power to choose the seeds you will nurture there; whether seeds of the Kingdom, leading to eternal life or seeds of this world leading to death that lasts forever.
Lord, it looks like You’re saying to me that the mind and the heart are very closely connected. That what we allow ourselves to dwell on mentally ends up as a plant — a growing thing — taking up the resources in our hearts.
(Here is a verse referenced in the next few paragraphs: “The earth trembles under three things; it cannot bear up under four: a servant when he becomes king, . . . and a servant girl when she ousts her queen. (Proverbs 30:21-23 HCSB))
It is true that the mind and heart are created to work as one. The mind is a tool of the heart, but frequently ends up usurping authority from the heart.
Things that become out of order are an abomination. The mind is the servant that has usurped authority over its master, the heart. The heart is the spiritual seat of power, but the mind has been given power by the natural person. Therefore the mind itself has become corrupt and it has also corrupted the heart by filling it with weeds that choke out the good seed — the Word and the words of God.
Do not be deceived. This power you have given the mind has twisted it into something it should never have become. The mind has become that science fiction horror; the computer or robot out of control; the sentient machine bent on its own will.
But, nurtured and fed and informed by the human heart, the dwelling place of the human spirit, the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit of God, the mind can be renewed and becomes that servant to Christ’s Spirit and yours that it was created to be.
The whole body should follow the heart as it follows the co-mingled human and divine Spirit that dwells therein.
