God was reminding me today of the issue of gratitude. It is an issue because, while I expect others to be grateful to me for things I might do for them (and to be honest, I’m not above being just a little miffed when I feel taken for granted) I myself am not always grateful to our Father. It’s not that I’m unappreciative in a general sense, but I often forget to say thank you, or even to think or feel it in my heart. I take the things He so graciously gives me as my due. Here is what I felt He said to me in response to my complaint about a fellow human:
“Welcome to the club, Child. And you do this too.”
Ouch! So I said:
“I’m sorry, Abba. You’re right – I do. I take whatever I want, and more than I need, and usually also, I do forget to thank You, when all I have comes from You. Thank You, Abba. You are so good to me.”
And He said:
“You are My child, and it is my duty to provide for all your needs, but it’s nice to be thanked.
“How do you know My hand if you do not remember to say thank you? While it is I who provide for every need, you are prone to forget this. And when you forget Me, your host, you forego the relationship. In this forgetting, you neglect the reason for the provision; that is, our oneness. We are to be one in the bonds of love, and in this we find joy – joy of loving, and of being loved in return.
“You cannot neglect love, lest you be cut loose and wander in darkness. Even then I will find you, My lamb, but you could wander long and long before you see another glimmer of light like My Son gives to you now. Come to the light while the light can be seen, and you will know the joy of your Father, rather than merely subsisting on these scraps that fall from the table.
“No scraps of material subsistence will supply the spirit of such beings as yourselves. You are destined to be My daughters and sons and can be ultimately satisfied with nothing less than the best I can give you. And the best I can give you is Myself.
“Your gratitude points you to the Host, while ingratitude merely eats and drinks, dresses, bathes, and sleeps at My behest, missing the whole point – which is the relationship – the becoming of the adopted sons and daughters of the Most High.
“All this you will miss if you neglect to be grateful – if all you are interested in is enjoying the things I provide for you, forgetting Me and My great love toward you.”
I realize my title doesn’t appear to have a lot to do with this exchange (yet), but in keeping with my desire to keep my posts manageable and bite-sized, I’m going to end this here. Next post I’ll go into a few of the thoughts this loving rebuke has begun to engender in my heart. See you then. 🙂
